Risks of radiotherapy

I had DCIS removed of which there was 3 mm of invasive cancer, my lymph nodes were clear. I’m due to have radiotherapy but am wondering about damage to my heart ( left breast). Do the benefits of a weeks radiotherapy outweigh the risks. I’m particularly concerned about the possible damage to my heart, as they have said I’m low risk recurrence.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

Do talk this through with your specialist doctor and nurse to decide what is best for you and to ensure the benefits of the radiotherapy outweigh any risks for you.

These days they ask patients to use the deep breath inhalation hold whilst they give radiotherapy to the left breast tissues. This technique is known to reduce the amount of radiation given to the heart and therefore reduces the risks to the heart. You can read more about this on radiotherapy UK website.

    I hope this is helpful.
