Worried and anxious - pregnant and have been in Radiotherapy waiting area

I visited my aunt today as she was receiving her last radiotherapy session for breast cancer at the hospital I work in. I was going to meet her in the café, but by the time I got there she had already gone into the radiotherapy waiting room when I had gone to look for her, so I ended up sitting with her in the waiting room... im 35 weeks pregnant and I'm now just a bit worried about the risks associated with being close to the radiotherapy treatment rooms, I didn't even think at the time... was there for around 10/15 mins. I was hoping someone may be able to put my mind at rest, or advise if there is anything I need to do as a result of this? Just quite worried and anxious that I have harmed my baby by going into the waiting room.

Thanks

  • Hi Lisa 1986, and you for posting

I believe you have also emailed our service which I have also answered..

With breast cancer, the usual type of radiotherapy that is given is what is known as external beam radiotherapy. This type of radiotherapy does not make anyone radioactive so it is safe for people to be around pregnant women and children.

It is only people who are having internal radiotherapy who may be nursed in isolation, usually on a ward where strict precautions are taken.

The radiotherapy departments have strict safety procedures that they have to follow, not just for the safety of the patients but also for the safety of the staff. Therefore it is highly unlikely that being in the radiotherapy waiting room will cause harm to your pregnancy. You can always have a chat with your doctor/ midwife if you are concerned at all.

I hope this helps  a little, good luck with the rest of your pregnancy,

    Jemma

  • My adult daughter attended a total of 4 X-rays in 3 weeks with her 2 year old child who had a broken leg. My daughter didn’t know she was about 5 weeks pregnant. She gave birth to a healthy baby who is now 2 years old and is fighting fit!
