Radiotheraphy for small stage 1 DCIS

Is it really necessary?

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

Radiotherapy following surgery isn't always needed for a stage 1 DCIS but this is something to discuss with the specialist team involved.

We have some information about DCIS and it's treatment on our webpages. As you can read if the cancer cells are considered high grade ( look and act very differently to other normal cells) then radiotherapy may be given to make sure all the cancer cells have been destroyed in the breast tissues.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you, it seems it is just the thing they do after surgery.  I don't see the point of damaging healthy tissue 'just in case' I am very blessed it is small, slow and caught early.  I see consultant on Thursday.  My gut feeling is I'm clear and I will be checked again in a year.
