Tamoxifen and kidneys

I have been on tamoxifen for 12 months and have just had a full raft of blood tests as part of an annual review. Everything is in the normal range apart from my kidney egfr which has fallen from 86 in Feb 22 to 74 in May 24. I had another test to rule out and acute kidney infection, which gave the same result.

I have none of the usual signs such as high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes. Plus I have no protein showing in a urine dipstick test.

Could this be linked to tamoxifen? My GP isn't in the slightest bit concerned and has said we will retest in 6 months.

I am worried. Could it be tamoxifen? Can tamoxifen affect creatinine levels?

Any advice or comments from anyone welcome please.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

It isn't unusual for blood results to come back slightly different. It does not necessarily mean anything when there are no other symptoms or changes.

As you say the GP isn't worried and checking again in 6 months, and sometimes something as simple as a bit of dehydration can cause changes in this test.

It is good to be aware of blood and test results, but it is also important to not get too caught up in slight changes. Be reassured that if your doctor was concerned they would tell you.

We have information on tamoxifen and its side effects on our website if useful to read.
