Breast surgery referral

Hi,

had a phone call from the nurse at the breast clinic results of my biopsy showing a sarcoma and now have had an invite to an appointment at the breast surgery department ? I was expecting oncologist would see me first ? Is this normal

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is quite normal to get the results from the breast clinic first. The breast surgeon and the nurses will be able to discuss their findings with you from the different tests that were performed.

It is quite difficult without being involved in your care to know the different processes that have taken place but the doctors may well have discussed your case in a formal meeting with all the other doctors involved which would include the radiologist and pathologist as well as the oncologist.

It is usually the surgeon who will meet with you first and then further down the line you will see the oncologist. If you are having chemotherapy then you will be referred by the surgeon to the oncologist.

Hopefully things will become clearer when you have your appointment at the breast clinic.

If you would like to discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
