2 week referral to Haematology

Hi.

My mum has been referred for a 2 week referral to Haematology. The GP said it was suspended bone marrow cancer.
What should we expect to be told or happen at this consultant appointment please?
I don’t want to go in blind. I’d like to know so that I am prepared.

Will my mum be sent for tests that day? Do they already know if she has something horrible?

Please help.
Many thanks,

Helen

  • Hello Helen and thanks for your post,

I can understand how unsettling it can be to be told that your mum has a suspected bone marrow cancer. I can't tell you what the doctors suspect without being involved in her care.

I am not sure what tests your mum has had already but depending on what tests she has had the doctors may want to conduct further tests to confirm a diagnosis . This may include more blood tests, bone marrow biopsy., x-rays and sometimes 24 hour urine tests.

The haematologists may still be trying to investigate her suspected bone marrow cancer so they may not have all the information they need to tell you what her next steps are.

The haematologist will also be assessing her general health to see how she may cope with any treatment if she needs it.

Once all the information has been collected your mum's case will be discussed in a formal meeting where all the different doctors involved in her care will confirm the diagnosis and work out a treatment plan.

If they are able to confirm the type of cancer that she has you can ask questions such as how can it be treated, how often will she have treatment, potential side effects, and how will it be monitored.

Your mum may well be given a haematology nurse who will hopefully be able to support her whilst all this is going on.

I can understand that before a diagnosis it can be very unsettling. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If the doctor says something that you don't understand do ask them to repeat what they have said.

It is good that you are able to go with your mum for her appointment.

If you would like to talk any of this through either before or after her appointment you are both very welcome to give the nurses a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine.

Thank you so much for replying.

It really has helped knowing a rough idea of what to expect.

My mum’s appointment is tomorrow so we should know more then.

Thank you for the phone number.  I’m sure it will come in useful.

Once again, thank you for your words of advice.

    Best wishes,

    Helen x
