Male breast lump

Good afternoon,

My boyfriend has found a small hard lump in the middle of his breast about 3 cm above his nipple.

He went to the doctor and they have referred him for an ultra sound on the urgent referral pathway.

He's 32 and been having testosterone replacement injections.

He's fit and well normally and he said he wouldn't of got it checked if i hadn't of made him go to the doctors.

The 2 week wait time is so quick but it feels like everything is going in slow motion. He's really struggling and i don't know how to help.
We are due to go on holiday in 4 weeks, and we are both thinking worst case scenario.

I know there is nothing anybody can say to help but i don't know how i can help him feel better.

I know male breast cancer is extremely rare especially at 32 but i don't know what else it could be.

Thanks

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear your boyfriend has a breast lump and this is understandably worrying for both of you.

There could be many reasons for this but until he has more tests no one can say exactly what is going on, I'm afraid.

It is best to try and take things one step at a time and not overthink this for now. As you say breast cancer is rare in men and most people undergoing a suspected cancer pathway won't go on to get a cancer diagnosis.

I understand you want to try and help him through this time. The waiting and not knowing is the worst time but keeping busy and your mind on other things can help pass the time and distract your thoughts.

Your boyfriend must look after himself by eating healthily, exercising, and getting a good amount of sleep. Some people find mindfulness helpful. You may like to take at the information on how to ease worry on the patient info website.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
