Skin cancer BCC

My husband has had a "spot" on the side of his head for at least 2 years, never really healed. It's started to bleed every time he knocks it, so he went to the GP and they believe it is BCC and have given him an urgent referral to see someone in Dermatology.

They have said he is on the waiting list and it will take up to 12 months. He's checked with the GP and they have said it was definitely made as an urgent referral, but the Hospital are adamant he has to wait. It's only about an inch from his eye which is why they were keen for it to be seen asap.

Any ideas on what he should or can do ?

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the wait your husband has to be seen by a dermatologist (skin specialist).

Unfortunately waiting lists are long and as bcc ( basal cell carcinoma) is considered a slow growing cancer that is unlikely to spread these aren't treated with the same urgency as other skin cancers.

I would suggest speaking with the GP again to let them know about any changes to the spot and to mention the bleeding. They may be able to change the referral slightly that may put him higher up the list. If you are willing to travel it may be worth asking if any other clinic (out of area) has shorter waiting times he could be referred to instead. This of course may not be possible.

Failing that and if you wish to raise a complaint about the waiting times to be seen you could raise a complaint with the hospital PALS team.

I hope your husband is able to be seen soon.
