  • Hello Artylydia

Our nurse team is now out of the office for the weekend so won't be able to reply to your message.

Were you given contact details for the district/community nurses when you left the hospital yesterday? Please do give them a call or call the ward at the hospital you were staying in as they will be best placed to talk to you about your pain levels and managing this with medication.

With regard to the dressing, it is likely that this needs to remain dry to ensure that things can heal without risk of infection but again the hospital or district nurses will be able to give you some advice and reassurance regarding this.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I hope things settle and your recovery continues to progress well.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello and thanks for the post

As the pain is worse that it was before it is best to get it checked out by your doctor just to be sure nothing else is going on.

Generally people will have some pain and discomfort for a couple of weeks after a drain removal, but this pain usually can be managed with something like paracetamol, if needed.

Usually the hospital team will give advice about when it is okay to have a shower after the drain is removed. However to my knowledge this is usually okay as long as you dry not to get the wound site too wet and carefully pat the area dry afterwards. I don't think baths are advised for a couple of weeks.

As I say if this pain is worsening, or you notice any other symptoms such as shortness of breath or a temperature alert your doctor for assessment and advice.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

All the best with your recovery,

    Take care
