Radio therapy burns treatment

I have had radio therapy on my tonsil which finished a week ago . The site is still moist and sore .  Is this normal at this time?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Yes, the effects of radiotherapy can continue for several weeks or more, after the course of radiotherapy has completed. This is because of the continuing action of the radiotherapy in the treated area of tissue. It should improve over time.

Take regular painkillers as advised. Do continue with whatever your hospital treatment team have suggested in terms of care. This may include mouthwashes or mouth gels. If soreness increases, then do make contact with your hospital team, or hospital specialist nurse (if you have one).

Your hospital pharmacist may also be able to advise on products that may help you with the soreness if needed.

    Hope this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
