Worried about constant basal cell carcinoma on my head

So im 45 and blad headed the reason for this is that I had childhood leukemia and obviously the drugs and chemotherapy can make your hair fall out.

I never had alot of hair! anway my points being is that for about the last 5 years now I have to go thru a horrible procedure where I first go to my GP  to get a suspect BCC looked at .

Then finally they take a biopsy... I wouldn't mind so much but it's always on the top of my head, so they have to stick a needle in my head for the local anesthetic.

Then I have to wait ages for the biopsy result then they might have to actually then cut it out.. I had one removed last Saturday and nearly passed out (as I could hear what they were doing).

I have run marathons before but the moment she put that local anesthetic in my head it was horribe i swore.

Anyway I seem to be going thru this procedure every year now..I don't understand as I always wear a hat now.

I guess I am worried it could lead to something else because of my past.

Would you always recommend wearing suntan lotion even under a hat?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, you may have a degree of skin damage, which might increase the chances of developing further basal cell skin cancers.

It is important to wear a wide brimmed hat, ideally with a high SPF (30 to 50) kitemark label. Such as those hats that are sold in outdoor clothing shops.

Mesh, boater or straw hats, or thin cotton baseball hats will not offer enough protection from UV. And yes, it would be sensible to also apply factor 30-50 SPF skin sun cream to your head, ears and face, all the year round, regardless of a hat or not. There are also lip balms with SPF 30 to 50 as well.

    Hope this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
