barrett's esophagus

Hi there.

I had an endoscopy done yesterday and I’ve been given a leaflet on barrett's esophagus. I’m a bit lost to be honest. I wasn’t sure they said I do have it but after being given the leaflet, I’m assuming I have?

what does this mean? I’ve looked on the cancer research website and from what I can gather, although my chances of getting cancer are small, eventually this will kill me?

thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid I can't tell you if you definitely have Barrett's oesophagus. I presume your doctor suspects you may have it but only they can confirm this for sure.

While Barrett's oesophagus can slightly increase a person’s risk of developing oesophageal cancer the majority of people won’t go on to develop it. Through regular assessment and monitoring of any changes to the lining of the oesophagus they can pick up abnormal areas hopefully at an early stage where it can be treated and managed.

If you are still worried you should go back to the GP to talk about your concerns. Usually they would get a summary letter from the hospital with any test results and the conclusions of the specialist on how you will be monitored.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
