Post surgery anxiety

My husband had a radical nephrectomy. He has recovered well physically and his follow up was  low risk cancer no further treatment except for scans at I 3 and 5 years. He is suffering from quite severe general anxiety and had a fairly bad melt down this evening. Is this usual? He had always suffered from anxiety but it is really bad now.

  • Hello Maggie74 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husband's past treatment and that he is struggling with anxiety at the moment.

I think it is common for patients who have gone through a cancer diagnosis and treatment to have some more anxious than other moments. This can be triggered by a new ache or pain or even an upcoming follow up scan or doctors appointment. However there could be something else playing on his mind that has triggered these emotions.

Try and talk to him about it if you can, failing that is there another family member or close friend who he trusts and may be able to open up to. If needed this could be mentioned to your husband's GP if you think there is something more going on that needs to be assessed.

Hopefully this is just a one off but if not do try and address this to find a way for your husband to cope and manage this better so it doesn't interfere with you both living your lives.

Anxiety UK and MIND have resources for managing anxiety so do take a look.
