Menopause after breast cancer

Hi

After breast cancer surgery in October 2022, and taking Tamoxifen since then, I was lucky not to suffer with any menopause symptoms until now.

I am 55, and In the last 12 weeks, I have suffered from night flashes and also day flashes and as I cannot take HRT, and my weight has increased.

I was wondering what the best alternative solutions are known to take in this community?

Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for you.

Breast Cancer Now have some tips on managing symptoms. Exercise can have an effect on helping symptoms and doing other forms of exercise such as yoga can also help.

We also have some tips on our website on menopausal symptoms that you can see here.

I think it is a question of finding out what works for you. Caffeinated drinks can have an affect on symptoms so you may find it helpful to cut down on these. Keeping a well ventilated room can help and having a fan near by. Cotton and loose clothing can also help.

Weight gain can be so frustrating. The British Nutrition Foundation have produced some information on managing menopause with diet which you might find has some good ideas.

You may like to look at a charity called Future Dreams. They offer therapy, support and exercise classes for breast cancer patients. They are based in London but at least half of these classes are on line.

You have posted in 'ask the nurses' but if you post on a different thread or start your own you may find you get more replies.

I do hope that some of these links may be useful.

I do hope that you find that some of these tips work for you. You may also find it helpful to discuss this with your GP. If there are menopausal clinics in your area you may find it helpful to be referred to one of these though there is sometimes  bit of a waiting list.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything through. We are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
