Had a colonoscopy recently that showed the blood is a result of m radiation treatment for my prostate cancer 17 years ago, anyone else had this, is there anything that can help?
I can appreciate it has been a long time since you had your radiotherapy. However when pelvic radiotherapy is used to treat for example prostate cancer, the lining of the bowel can be damaged, and small new blood vessels are formed as the bowel begins to heal itself. These are on the surface of the bowel lining rather than deep in the bowel muscle wall. Because of this the vessels can sometimes break and bleed especially if straining to have bowels open or passing a hard poo.
Late effects of radiotherapycan begin months or years after treatment is given. Your doctor will be able to clarify this is the case for you as they know your situation better.
Most people who notice bleeding from the back passage may only notice the bleeding occasionally, in rare situations if the bleeding is heavy, then treatment may be needed such as burning the site of the bleeding (cauterizing). Do speak with your doctor about whether or not you may need any further treatment.
