Process for diagnosis

Hi - my Dad (75) has just been told he has Stomach Cancer following a biopsy and CT Scan last week. They have yet to tell him any more information ie: Stage, Treatment options etc saying that further tests are required and a follow up meeting will be scheduled. I luckily have limited cancer experience, but it feels strange that he has been given a diagnosis without any details?. Can anyone please advise if this is normal procedure? We all want to 'make a plan', but its impossible without the important data. Thanks x

  • Hi MStep23 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your dad’s situation,  this must be a difficult time for all the family.

Doctors can diagnose cancer from a biopsy. They need to communicate this diagnosis to your dad so he understands why further tests are necessary. So many people worry about the time it takes to get a diagnosis. Whenever possible, doctors strive to be honest and provide results as quickly as they can.

The next step would be to establish the type and grade of the cancer  and the staging of the stomach cancer.  The results of the biopsy and staging scans will be discussed at an  Multi disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting and the treatment options will be discussed.

Your dad will then have an appointment to explain the outcomes of the meeting, and he will have a chance to ask the doctors questions at his appointment.

I hope you find this information helpful.
