Chemotherapy

Just had my discharge from general surgery after the wide local excision and been told that will need chemo and radiotherapy for HER positive cancer.they said I will receive an oncology appointment in about 4 weeks. South Wales  Newport.

How long is usually after surgery when the chemo actually starts, just wonder if I should go back to work or not.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

After breast surgery, chemotherapy is generally started within approximately 4 to 8 weeks afterwards. It depends to a degree on how soon someone's breast surgery wound heals up.

Your hospital breast care nurse can give you more advice. It is generally not a good idea to return to work soon after surgery, if the job involves physical activity. Heavy lifting for example, would need to be avoided, until everything heals. A desk job might be possible.

    I hope that this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Hi. I had my third operation (mastectomy) on April 2nd and I am starting chemotherapy on 13th June.  My oncology appointment was approx 4 weeks after my results appointment following surgery so same as you have been told. I returned to work following my appointment and I’m hoping to work as much as I can throughout chemo. I had my ops in Newport and having chemo in xxxx. Hope that helps.
