Lumpectomy infection

I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on Tuesday. I've had a raised temperature on and off since, but today I felt not great, with flu-like symptoms, a raised temperature of around 38°, and ge rally feeling unwell but not vejng able to put my finger on it. I checked my breast this evening when going to bed, and saw that my breast is very red, hot, and hard. I called NHS 111 and had a tria call, and am waiting for a clinician to call back, but I don't know if I should just go to A&E. My breast looks pretty bad...

  • Hello Goosemin,

Unfortunately our nurses are not online over the weekend so they won't be able to reply to you until Tuesday at the earliest given the bank holiday weekend. You did well to call NHS 111 and if they don't ring you quickly I think it might be worth going to A&E as from the symptoms you describe it sounds like you need to be seen by someone. So I would make the trip to A&E and it's important you see someone soon given your symptoms so they can check whether you have an infection for example.

I hope you manage to see a doctor today so that you get the treatment you need for this.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Goosemin and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn you have been feeling unwell after your procedure. I see that you have received the same advice we would have given you from our moderator Lucie and laraj and hopefully, you will have been seen by a doctor by now and are starting to feel better.

Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best
