Precancerous cells in larynx

Survival rates? My partner is being offered lazering. How successful is this? I feel overwhelmed.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that your partner has precancerous cells in the larynx.

It sounds like your partner has laryngeal dysplasia (abnormal cells). This is a precancerous condition, which if left untreated may lead to cancer.

Laser treatment aims to get rid of the abnormal cells completely. Treating the abnormal cells will reduce the risk of laryngeal cancer.

I'm afraid I cannot find statistics for this specific situation. Also, the difficulty with statistics is they are based on a group of people, they do not talk about a person's individual situation.

How successful the treatment is may depend on the grade of the dysplasia ( how abnormal the cells are). The best person to discuss this with would be your partner's specialist as they know their situation.

I can appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty and this is a difficult and overwhelming time for you. You would be welcome to speak with one of the nurses on our helpline, the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 between 9am and 5pm.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
