Basal cell carcinoma

Hi

I went to the gp today to see about a small skin coloured growth on the crease of my nose between the cheek and the nose . It’s about 5mm long and for a few years I’ve just put it down to a skin tag or small cyst . The trainee doctor said it could be basal cell carcinoma and didn’t give any other options and said she would take a picture and send it on to dermatology.Im now in a state of shock and my anxiety is through the roof.i have two young daughters and a wife who I love very much and now I’m worried I might die as Ive left it so long . The trainee gp said she would send it on Tuesday the picture on Tuesday because of the holiday weekend while I’m in turmoil.i know all about it now as I haven’t been off Google but can’t forgive myself for letting it go this long

  • Hi and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry to read about your situation.  It does sound like this is a difficult time for you.

I can understand how the word cancer can conjure up a wide range of emotions.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer. It generally takes years to develop in most people. Most people will only need surgery as their primary treatment.

It's very rare for basal cell skin cancer to spread to another part of the body to form a secondary cancer. Basal cell carcinomas are rarely seen as life-threatening.

You are right to keep an eye on any moles you have and assess them regularly. Not all moles that change are cancerous. Here is a guide to help you assess your moles.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.
