Hair loss from chemotherapy

Hello

I was diagnosed with stage 2 bowel cancer this week and will be having chemotherapy in 12 weeks time. I don’t want to lose my hair and wondered which types of chemotherapy for bowel cancer doesn’t cause hair loss?

  • Hello kitterfly and thanks for your post.

The majority of drugs that are given for colorectal cancer do not cause hair loss but irinotecan can cause hair thinning and in some cases hair loss.

I would talk to your oncology team about your concerns as they may factor this in in deciding the most appropriate regime.

Once the treatment stops if you are having treatment that causes any hair loss it will grow back.  We do have some information on our website about  hair loss and treatment. It also has an A-Z of different cancer drugs so you can look up the drugs that you have been prescribed for more information on potential side effects.

You may have a specialist nurse so do talk to them.

If you would like to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
