Colonoscopy screening & Colon cleansing

On Tuesday I have Colonoscopy screening , to check thé large colon which is less than 1/3 of its original size ( had operation two years ago to remove Cancer lump in it )   The hospital sent the thing to drink before the colonoscopy, which has many cancerous elements and additives that are known to  cause cancer ! So I am thinking to get Colon cleanse ? Is that ok ?  Is there any risks to have colon cleanse knowing that my colon is  very short ? Advise please .

  • Hello Faye153 and thanks for your post,

I am afraid that I am not able to advise you about this. In order to perform a successful colonoscopy it is important to have a clear bowel which is achieved by taking the bowel prep. You are only taking this prep once and I am sure that only taking it once will not increase your cancer risk.

Having a bowel cleanse doesn't come without risks and you need to make sure that the person doing the procedure is experienced. Healthline has some information on their website about colon cleansing which you might find helpful to look at.

Whatever you decide to do, do discuss it with your doctors. The doctors always weigh up the risks and benefits before  a procedure such as a colonoscopy.  Do talk to them about your concerns.

If you would find it helpful to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
