  • Hello and thank you for your your post.

I am sorry to hear that you will be receiving treatment for lung cancer. I can appreciate that this is a difficult time for you.

I am afraid that without being part of your care team it is not possible to know what is expected to happen to your cancer once the radiotherapy is finished.

During and after your treatment you may see that any symptoms you have will get better.  Generally speaking, it may be possible that radiotherapy can cause the cancer to shrink. There may also be a small possibility that it could get rid of the cancer. However, I do not know the likelihood of this happening, only your lung cancer team can tell you this.

You may be scanned a few weeks after the radiotherapy has finished. This will be the definitive way to understand the impact the treatment has had on your cancer.

Do talk with your cancer team about this, in particular your cancer nurse specialist. They know more about your situation and may be able to give you more information about your outlook.

We have information about radiotherapy for lung cancer on our website, this may be useful to see.

You may also find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
