Speech and language therapy

My dad has advanced mouth and throat cancer, and is finding it difficult to speak. He is on palliative care at the moment, but os there some support he can get to help him speak, through speech and language therapy on the NHS, like an electrolarynx or something?

  • Hi faith234,

I am sorry to learn that your dad has throat cancer, I imagine it is distressing for him that it has affected his speech.

Not being involved in your dad's care we cannot say if there are communication aids that can help. If he has not been referred to a speech and language therapist (SALT) it is worth him speaking with his doctors at the hospital or his nurse specialist (CNS), and asking if he should be having a referral. The SALT will then be able to assess your dad and advise if any aids will be able to help improve his situation.

The type of communication tool used will depend on his situation, and on what type of treatment he has had (if any).

It may be worth looking at The Mouth Cancer Foundation website which has an online support group that offers practical advice and support for people affected by cancers of the head and neck.

I hope this helps a little. Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
