Skin cancer removal and blood thinners?

I am taking Rivaroxaban and have been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma. Can it be removed whilst taking blood thinners?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Surgery may be possible when you are on blood thinning medication.

Because your blood is kept thinner you may be more likely to bleed. When the doctor looks to see if it's safe to carry out surgery they will look at your risk of bleeding.  As I said surgery may still be possible but some adjustments to your blood thinning medication may need to be done. For example, you may be asked to stop it for a few days before the surgery or the dermatologist (skin doctor) may want to do a blood test  Your doctor will know what to do.

However, not all basal skin cancers are treated with surgery. For example, some treatments can be given as a cream. You can read more about how skin cancer is treated on our website.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
