Fragile skin after radiation

Hello

I had treatment for anal cancer 6 years ago , I’m now 63 .the radiation has made the vaginal skin very thin and delicate

More recently I have been getting very sore and itchy around the delicate area of my vagina .the skin keeps splitting and is extremely uncomfortable.

is there a cream or anything I can use for relief and help the healing when the skin splits

thank you

  • Hello curlytops61 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the sore skin that you are experiencing 6 years down the line.

The NHS have produced some information on caring for the pelvic area during pelvic radiotherapy. I know it is a while since you have had treatment but it does have some useful tips. Have a look at the information on caring for your skin

In the NHS information they do suggest various creams but I would check with your GP to see what they recommend. If the skin keeps splitting it may be a good idea to show your GP the sore area to see what they suggest.

Avoiding any scented products and showering if you can  instead of having a bath may help. You could also discuss this with your pharmacist to see what products they may suggest. Trying to avoid scented soap and using aqueous cream may help.

I do hope that you manage to find something that works for you.

if you would like to discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm

    All the best,

    Catherine
