Transvaginal scan and Hysteroscopy

Hi,

i had a Hysteroscopy two weeks ago following an inconclusive transvaginal scan. I have also had biopsys taken but have not yet had the results. I am trying to make sense of the letter the consultant has sent to my GP as its contradictory. Should I be concerned regarding the 6.4mm ? As the Dr then says only slightly thickened.

Her ultrasound showed endometrial echo of 6.4mm with mixed echogenicity. Hysteroscopy had shown only a slightly thickened endometrium on the posterior wall. I have taken Pipelle biopsy. I shall contact her with the results in due course.

This is what the letter said, what does mixed echogenicity mean?

Any help would be much appreciated. The waiting for the biopsy results is agony x

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, as nurses, we are not able to answer your questions about report results. Your consultant will have taken all of the presenting factors of your situation into account, before deciding as to whether a biopsy was necessary to do. Womb thickening can be due to womb cancer, or more commonly, a condition called Endometrial hyperplasia. This is when the cells in the womb lining build up and the lining becomes thickened. Endometrial hyperplasia is a benign (non cancerous) condition, but if left untreated, it may slightly increase the risk of developing womb cancer.  But this increase in risk is generally quite low and most women with endometrial hyperplasia would not develop womb cancer. If the thickened lining also contains abnormal cells (not cancer), this is called atypia, then the risk of womb cancer is higher. You can read more about this condition on the 'Patient' website at this .link

A biopsy is usually suggested, in order to get more information about the womb cells present.

I hope that you get to find out more soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
