What happens next

Hi, recently my father of 75 received a letter confirming he has basal cell carcinoma after having a biopsy. The letter stated that somebody would be in touch but it gives no information on the severity of the cancer, how long it would be until someone gets in touch or what the next steps are regarding any treatment,  please could someone advise . Thanks.

  • Hi Holly and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that your father has been diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma  is the most commonest type of skin cancer.

I  can appreciate that waiting any length of time to be treated is very stressful. Basal cell carcinomas (BCC)  typically grow very slowly, rarely spreads, and are rarely serious.

Treatment to remove a BCC isn't regarded as urgent and people often have to wait several months for treatment.

The British Association of Dermatology website provides detailed information on basal cell carcinoma,  including its symptoms, causes, and treatment options.

In the meantime, all I can really suggest is that you talk about your concerns with your GP. Hopefully, they will be able to reassure you that BCC's generally takes years to develop in most people. So waiting a few months is unlikely to do any harm.

I hope this helps and you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Tina
