Urgent Gynaecology Appt - What Should I Expect ?

So after finding a golf sized hard lump on my left labia, my GP has referred me under the 2 week cancer pathway to gynaecology. What can I expect at this first app? I'm terrified of needles and will only give blood if I've had numbing cream applied so if they will.be taking bloods then I would prefer to apply the numbing cream before i leave for the appt.

I'm so scared and have no idea what type of gynaecological cancer I could dealing with as I've not had any other symptoms (except after the referral I have had some abdomoinal cramps and back pain but dont know whether  they are symptoms or because I'm so anxious and nervous).

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm not completely sure what the gynaecologist will do as individual specialists do things in different ways.  But it is very likely that they will take a full history (ask you questions about your health),and do a physical examination.

Depending on the assessment the gynaecologist may order further tests and ask to see you again when the results are available. It may take a couple of weeks to get other tests organised. I don't think that it is common to get everything sorted in one visit. If they suggest a biopsy, it can take a couple of weeks to get the results. I'm not sure if they will arrange for you to have a blood test. But it's best to be prepared in case they might do and apply the numbing cream before you leave for your appointment.

You might find that the gynaecologist is able to give you an opinion of what they think is the matter on the day, and there may be no need for further tests. But if they are unsure you may find that they are reluctant to say much at this first appointment. I know you are worried but please do not assume the worst if the specialist asks for more tests. This is quite common and it does not always mean that anything serious is wrong.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
