Omentum

What is the omentum please? Are there disadvantages to having it removed?

If you already have extensive adhesions, is it harder to remove?

Can you still get adhesions after it’s removal or does having it removed help?

Thank you.

  • Hello and thank you for coming back to us,

It will be difficult for me to give you exact answers to your questions, as they are quite individual to you. Your surgeon would be able to answer more specifically.

The omentum is an apron-like covering that lays over your organs in your abdomen. The operation to remove this is called an omentectomy and is a surgery that is not unusual to have when ovarian cancer is present.

I do not know if it will be difficult to remove the omentum in your situation, or what will happen with existing or new adhesions. But, your surgeon would not suggest this unless they felt it was necessary.

Try and write your questions down so that you can fully discuss this all further with your hospital team when you see or speak to them. Or if you have a specialist nurse (CNS), do talk it through with them.

Take care Positive1, and if you want to talk with one of the nurses on our helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
