Biopsy

Hi I had a biopsy  on my groin done on Friday, they took 3 samples, just wondering do you know if this would cause me to bleed the next day, like having a period ?

Thanks

  • Hi Reb29,

Unfortunately the nurses won't be here to answer your question until Thursday. I'm not a nurse but I've been a cancer patient for many years & I've had biopsies before, including in my groin and I've never had this problem. Were you given a contact number at the hospital that you can ring if you have any problems post surgery? If so, I suggest you ring them & they can advise you better than anyone here. If you haven't got a number and it being a Bank Holiday weekend, I suggest you ring 111 and they may be able to get a GP to ring you back with advice. Of course, if the bleeding gets worse or doesn't stop, you may want to go to A&E but only you can decide if you think it's appropriate.

I hope it settles down and everything goes well for you,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

hi, they did not give me any contact number, but I'm hoping it is my period I'm trying to work it out, as I forgot the date of my last period, thanks for your help xx

  • Hello Reb29 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing tests and this must be a worrying time for you.

Whilst having a biopsy can cause some bleeding at the site where the biopsy needle was taken this shouldn't cause a period.

It may just be a coincidence but do let your doctor know if you are concerned or the bleeding is different to a normal period for you.

I hope you know more soon about your situation.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
