Contact lenses during radiotherapy

I have breast cancer. I’ve had a successful operation to remove it and am due to start radiotherapy next week. I’ve asked so many questions so don’t want to bother the nurses again but I will have to drive myself to my appointments & forgot to ask if I can wear my contact lenses for driving & during the actual radiotherapy treatment?

  • Hi Georganne and thank you for post.

I’m sorry to hear of your breast cancer diagnosis but happy that the operation was a success.

I can understand that you have many questions you want to ask about the next stage of your treatment. Your hospital team and Breast care Nurse are the best people to ask as they know more about your situation. They are aware that questions pop up once the consultation has finished.

We have information on our website about radiotherapy for breast cancer which you may find helpful.

While many people drive themselves to their radiotherapy appointments without issue, radiotherapy can cause side effects which may make it difficult for some to continue to drive themselves.

Tiredness can be a general side effect of radiotherapy which many people suffer from, and some women find it can cause difficulty in movement of the affected arm.

It should be ok to wear your contact lenses during your treatment session, as the radiotherapy is aimed at the tattoo marks and should avoid your face and eyes.

I hope you find this information helpful and that your radiotherapy is as successful as your surgery.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Take care

    Tina
