Glioblastoma brain tumour

Well, after two weeks in hospital informed today that there is no treatment available and palliative care only. No chemo or anything, I have other serious health issues.

Being sent home tomorrow after palliative referral.

Of course, optimism and hope pretty well wiped out, devastated at the emotional impact on my wife and son, especially as they are not quoting any time expectation. Stating maximum 9-12 months but I get a feeling their expectation to be much less but I can't get any idea.

Surely this makes things harder to manage?

  • Hello missyandwilma,

I am very sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I can imagine that receiving this news is a shock and I appreciate any concerns you have.

Knowing you have been referred to the palliative care team is reassuring. They will be able to tell you more about your situation and what can be done to help you and your family. They will see you at home and are experts at symptom control and can refer you to other services if needed.

Understanding someone's prognosis is difficult, and it really is not possible to be exact with it.  For example, sometimes people can live longer.  This is something the palliative care team will discuss with you.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Caroline.
