Investigating rectal bleeding frustration, need advice

Hi Guys, so I have had dark blood that has been prevalent in my stool for the past 5 months. My stool colour and shape, for the 1st 3 months, was black pebbles coated in dark blood. This persisted for around 3 months. GP referred me under the 28 day rule. I had a Colonoscopy that was clear - no tumour, no polyps and no haemorrhoids. However, the Endoscopist then took me off the 28 day rule. This then meant that l had to cycle back through the system again. All this time I'm feeling heavy nausea, fatigue amd generally unwell, and crucially with this bleeding continuing which led me to visit A&E numerous times.

Fast forward to now and I have just had an Upper Gastroscopy,  at the end of which the Endoscopist told me there was nothing of concern here either. Unless I'm mistaken this means that they have investigated the following:

- large bowel

- upper GI region

But they have not investigated my small intestines.

So my question is, what reasons are you maybe aware of that would have made them decide not to do a full endoscopy, which again, unless I'm mistaken, would have also investigated my small intestine? Surely if they were going to do an Endoscopic procedure it would make sense to cover it all in one go wouldn't it?

I just feel concerned that this is still going on and they haven't as yet discovered the site of bleeding. I have noticed also that during this period I often wake up in the morning and clear my nose of mucus, from the back of my nose and into my throat. It often contains dark blood clots, so I'm now wondering whether this could potentially be the cause of why my stool is still streaked with blood and mucus. Is this anything you guys have come across in your years of experience, where the cause of dark blood in stool turns out to be from a posterior nasal bleed?

Kind regards

Darren

  • Hi there Darren

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you are having and despite tests still have no answers about the cause.

Symptoms as you know can be caused by lots of different things, but I'm afraid no one here can diagnose or give a medical opinion on what has happened so far.

You need to talk this through with your doctor so they can decide what further tests may be needed for you. Whilst it is reassuring that nothing has been found so far, I appreciate the ongoing symptoms are a worry for you.

I do hope you have some answers soon.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
