Parapharangeal tumour

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with a large (4.5x2.5x2.1cm) tumour in the deep lobe and paraharangeal space. The doctor is discussing with other surgeons what to do as apparently it’s quite rare. They have advised they think it’s benign but can’t do a biopsy due to where it is. I feel exhausted, suffer from night sweats, loss of facial sensation and nausea - so I am not sure this is right. Are there any other tests I can ask for to confirm this whilst they determine next steps? Thanks

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the concern you have.

I am sure the team caring for you will be discussing your case with other specialist teams to find out what this is.

I am afraid I do not know for sure what will be needed to be done. They may wish to do further scans such as a MRI scan or a PET scan to get more information, if they have not already done so.

Sometimes, a biopsy can be done with a scan such as a CT or PET scan, but that is not always posible.

If you have not told your team about your current symptoms then please do let them know.

I hope you hear from your specialist team about what needs to be done soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
