Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

My husband has just been diagnosed with Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma. He is 67, strong, fit,a non smoker and very occasional drinks!

We are beyond devastated, as we thought that he had pneumonia, or a chest infection!

He had 6 litres, in total, of bloodstained fluid drained from his pleural space in one lung.

He is due to start the Astrazenica EVOLVE Meso trial.

He will either receive 2 different Immunotherapy drugs, or the trial arm with 2 Chemo drugs and 1 new Immunotherapy drug

Does anyone know what I can expect for him? He has never given in to an illness in his life....he is the boss of his own Structural Engineering Company, and is still trying to stay normal by going in to work.

Any help or info gratefully received, as I am in shock, and in the dark

  • Hi

My husband has just been diagnosed today with Metheslioma so I understand how you must be feeling . I hope his treatment goes well

  • Isn't it just beyond devastating.....I don't know how I am supposed to be, or feel.....so sorry to hear about you, and I really appreciate your reply.

What sort of Mesothelioma does he have?

In my thoughts....what a journey ahead for us both xxx

  • I'm not sure which type as we have to see an oncologist in a couple of weeks . He is just having a drain fitted at the moment to help with the breathing . I'm.trying to keep.it together for him but like you devasted . Please keep in touch and I will be thinking of you .

  • Of course I will...the drain should help....are they keeping him in hospital for it?xxx

  • No he had it done this afternoon and came straight home . District nurse will.come ti drain it . This is a journey I didn't envisage  for our older years .

  • Hi Valerie and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your husband’s diagnosis and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you and your husband.

It is difficult to say what to expect as we are not involved in your husband’s care. Every person’s cancer journey will be different. The best people to ask is his medical team.

There is a useful charity called  Mesothellioma UK  which you and your husband might like to look at.

There is more information, which you may have read, about the trial called (eVOLVE-Meso). It explains about the trial and what to expect including potential side effects.

We also have information about potential side effects of  chemotherapy  at our website.

When a friend or loved one has cancer you may wonder how best to help and support them. You may like to read our webpage on  supporting someone with cancer which may give some useful tips and advice.

It's important to take care of yourself  during this time. Supporting someone with cancer can feel overwhelming. So make sure you prioritise your own well-being and seek support as needed.

Macmillan have teamed up with Bupa to offer some free counselling sessions if you feel you would like to talk to someone.   Maggie's centres also offer counselling and support.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
