Biopsy results need a second opinion

Hi, im just wondering if my experience is normal and common or not -

I had a mole excision and biopsy done 8 weeks ago, it was excised in a public hospital (Ireland) through a private dermatologist referral. I was told my results will be sent by post 2-6 weeks after the excision.

On week 7 with no word on my results I finally got my dermatologist office to chase my results for me, turns out my results were ready but the hospital refused to release my results to my gp or my dermatologist and never sent me a letter like they said they would. They said I have a follow up appointment (a month away) but I don't, my next appointment is for a different lesion altogether, so i didn't understand why they couldn't release my results.

After making a few calls I finally got talking to someone at the hospital who cleared up the confusion and confirmed that I don't have a follow up appointment and said someone will be in touch with me about my results, after waiting 2 days after that I emailed them asking wouldn't it be faster and easier for me to get my results if they just release them to my gp.

Then I got an email from someone I don't know saying they're a dermatologist at the hospital and my results show no evidence of cancer and it looks like solar lentigo, but because my mole was suspicious they want a second opinion on it which will take up to two months more to confirm that it's bening that's why my results weren't quite ready yet.

Questions:

1. Is it common for doctors to "email" results like this?

2. If it's bening like they say, why did they think I needed a follow up appointment.

3. Why couldnt they tell that to my gp or dermatologist office that my results look clear but they're awaiting a second opinion?

4. Could they have lied over the email saying no evidence of cancer?

Is this delay and withholding of my diagnosis common?

I'm also pregnant and keep overthinking what if they're waiting for my next appointment to tell me my real biopsy results

5. Do pregnant women ever get lied to in these circumstances?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

However, I am afraid to say that because you are being investigated by an Irish hospital it might be more helpful to speak to the Irish Cancer Society   They have a cancer nurse helpline and will be able to answer your questions much better than we can.

I hope you can get to know more about your situation soon.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • I am not a nurse and certainly no expert but I cannot imagine why they would lie to you. That would give you good grounds to sue them and I doubt they want any more scandals. If they did lie and missed something and your condition became more serious as a result, they'd be in huge trouble. There is absolutely no benefit to lying for them and a lot of major disadvantages.

Again, I am no expert but it sounds like they aren't 100% sure of the results so want a second opinion.
