AML

My Mum has just been diagnosed with AML. As she is almost 83 the treatments are limited and we have been told this will affect her prognosis, what can we expect in the coming months

  • Hi LanaS and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with  Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

It is very difficult for us to say what your mum’s prognosis (how long she will live) is as we are not part of her hospital team. So our advice about this sort of thing is always to talk to the health professionals directly involved and get their input.

It is also difficult at this moment since we don't know what kind of treatment she will be eligible for or how she will respond to any treatment the doctor gives her.

Once all of the information is known, a treatment plan is in place, and they see how she gets on, her team will get a better idea of time frames if it is something your mum wants to know. If you feel you want to be more of a part of your mum’s care and can attend appointments or talk with her team, do ask your mum to tell the team that she gives permission for her medical information to be shared with you.

It is so hard when someone we love has news like this, and we want to know the answers and jump ahead a bit. But for now, just supporting her, and looking after yourself  too is important.

Take care and if you want to give us a call the number Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.

    Kind regards

    Tina

  • Hi Tina, thank you for coming back to me. We are due to see the consultant next week to hear the results of the genetic test and to have another transfusion. I understand some treatments available for younger fitter people would not be an option for Mum. I will follow you advice and ask Mum to give permission for all the information.

    Many thanks

    Lana
