Oesophageal Laser Treatment

Good Evening, I'm feeling quite lost and upset and trying to find some impartial advise about the possibility of arranging laser treatment for my dad's oesophageal cancer.

He now has a blockage in his oesophagus which is making even liquidized foods difficult to swallow. His NHS consultant and cancer nurses are not even aware of this treatment and it feels they have given up on offering any further treatment, despite my dad's will to live and not give up.

Having read on CRUK and advice from Macmillan that this treatment can be affective in advanced oseophagael cancer I need to find somewhere either within the NHS or privately who can offer this treatment. Any advice or help would be amazing at this point.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

    I can appreciate your concern.

Unfortunately, we do not have access to NHS resources, about where it may be offered. Usually, more specialized treatments will be given at large cancer centres, usually in large towns or cities, or in London hospitals, for example. The same applies to accessing private care, as the smaller private hospitals are not likely to be able to offer this. The Private Health UK website can provide details of private health services in the UK. Some of the NHS hospitals in London, also have private patient units on the same hospital site. The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, is a well known NHS cancer hospital that also has private care They may provide this treatment, but I don't know for sure.

Your dad's consultant should be able to comment on this. There is particular patient criteria for oesophageal laser treatment, and it may not be possible to do, if someone is currently having any treatment, such as radiotherapy.

I hope that this helps a little,

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
