Do I need to be checked?

Hi...

My brother recently passed away from bowel cancer aged 44.

I haven't got any symptoms at all but because he was a close family member and a fairly young age I was wondering if I need to get checked? Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear about your brother.

We have information on our website about family history and bowel cancer and information on bowel screening

We suggest that you first speak to your GP, and provide details of your family member with bowel cancer.

They can assess you, and then if appropriate, refer you to a genetics/bowel clinic for an assessment.

    I hope that this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
