Private options for diagnosis

My 24 year old had a small mole appear just under a year ago. They went to the doctors and it was dismissed as a new mole. The mole has grown and become very dark over the last few months and I finally managed to persuade my daughter to go back to the GP. The initial appointment had made her feel like she was being a bit silly, or a bit of a nuisance so she wasn't keen. The new GP referred her and was seen in 2 weeks, the consultant said he wanted a biopsy which she waited 3 weeks for, and she has now had that done. At the biopsy the consultant said the mole was concerning given it is an ugly duckling and with how dark it is. Today daughter called to ask how long it would be before she got the results and has been told 12-14 weeks. The NHS website in Scotland says 2 weeks and we are shocked at how long she will have to wait.

I am wondering if there is anything we could do privately to get any tests done in the meantime, I know the mole is now gone and sitting in a lab for the foreseeable future, but could she have an MRI or any other testing? It seems like such a long time to wait and I would love to be able to do something in the meantime to, hopefully, reassure her.

Any advice, experience, words of wisdom, or reassurance would be gratefully received.

  • Hi Fay 75 and thank you for your posting,

I am sorry to read that your daughter was found to have an ugly duckling mole. I can understand this has been a worrying time for you all.

The ugly duckling is a term used to describe a mole that looks suspiciously different from other moles, which needs to be checked, as this possibly could be an early melanoma.

I can appreciate that waiting for the results of the biopsy must be difficult and stressful, and many people can feel helpless in this situation. Unfortunately not being involved in your daughter's care I cannot say whether or not she needs to have any further tests or what tests she could have whilst she is waiting for the results.

Usually, once the results of the biopsy have been confirmed, if it is found that it is an early melanoma and it has all been removed then further tests are not needed. If there is a concern that the melanoma may have spread then further scans may be done. It might be worth your daughter getting advice from the consultant who removed the mole, as they know her situation.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful on this occasion. Please do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
