Prostate Cancer

I am so confused. My Partner has recently had biopsies that showed a low grade cancer in 2 out of 24 biopsies. These results didn’t quite tally with his MRA ,which show his prostate is bulging, so the consultant decided to repeat the biopsies under general anaesthetic. He had around 48 biopsies taken, and we’ve been awaiting a letter calling us in to discuss the results. This morning we had a letter saying he has an appointment…in 6 months. No explanation, no results, just a standard appointment letter. I’ve spent this morning phoning around trying to find out what’s going on and have just been called by another consultant’s secretary who told me that there is no evidence of cancer. She didn’t know any more than that, but said that there will be another letting coming out to us explaining the results. We’re both in shock and can’t get our heads around it. What does this mean? Was the first result a false positive? Does he have cancer or not? We’re both reeling at the moment.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you and your husband are in this situation, but I don't think I can shed any more light as I don't know if your husband has cancer.

I can appreciate that this is a worrying situation. However, this situation with your partner's initial diagnosis and then the negative test result is unusual so I think it would need to be explained by his team.

Hopefully, the letter that is coming will explain more, but I would also urge you to write down any questions and ask for a further conversation/meeting if you still feel unsure. Or, you could discuss this with your husband's GP.

Take care Debs and please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
