What's the timescale for further tests and treatment?

Hi all

I am 39 and have 2 small kids and a husband and I am very scared of this diagnosis. It's made worse by my  mum having died of metastatic breast cancer in 2019. I never anticipated getting it this young!

I found the lump (4x2cm) at Easter weekend and just had a biopsy result on Friday to tell me its Grade 1 ER+ cancer at 39! I did go private initially as I was told the initial 2ww could be more like 3. But actually it was just under 2 weeks.

I'm waiting for a NHS appointment (booked in for a telephone appt on Monday) with the same consultant to arrange MRI scan and mammograms and a genetic blood test.  How long do these tests take to get booked in and results to go to the MDT to agree a treatment plan?

I am really struggling with the waiting and not knowing what's happening. Both of my girls' birthdays are soon and I can't feel that I can plan anything and my life and theirs are totally on hold!

Thanks all in advance.

  • Hi Redruth 84 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis of Grade 1,  ER+ve breast cancer, and I can appreciate how difficult it is waiting for things to happen.  Cancer can evoke a range of emotions,  particularly for you after everything with your mum. Try to remember that everyone's cancer behaves differently. Even if there is a genetic link to your mum, it does not mean the outcome will be the same, as this diagnosis is very treatable.

Trying to stay positive can help some people cope with their diagnosis, but equally, this can be hard to do all the time. Throwing yourself into the kids, work, family life can be how some people manage, but everyone is different.

The current guidelines state that suspected cancer referrals should be treated within 62 days of receipt by the hospital. However, these guidelines are not mandatory and the wait can change depending on other factors such as NHS pressures locally.

I know waiting when you are worried is incredibly stressful, but hopefully, you’ll know more soon. Anxiety UK  has useful tips and advice if helpful, and Breast Cancer Now has many lines of support and a forum.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support, and You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Thank you Tina. Hopefully I'll know more on Monday.

  • I'm sorry to hear your diagnosis but as Tina said, it should be very treatable. From my own experience, the waiting is awful. I was diagnosed with er+, her2-, grade 2 IDC in December. I had surgery in January and a second surgery in march. Next week I will get the results and hopefully a plan of what is next. It is almost 5 full months since my diagnosis. Good luck with it all. Let is know how you get on. X

  • Thank you, BlueSatsuma for taking the time to reply.  Yes I agree the waiting is awful. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It's good that you have had your initial surgery quickly. But sorry that you have had to have more I'm March. I will keep everything crossed for your results too. Please do let me know how you get on. X

  • I've had my appointment. The consultant said it will be up to 2 weeks for the MRI and the mammograms/xrays.  Then back to see him in approximately 3 weeks to agree a treatment plan.   The genetic tests will take 4 months but treatment  won't be delayed in the meantime.

He is starting me on tamoxifen now already.

  • Fast service. All that takes months where I live. I hope you get answers soon and things get moving. I'm back in the loop as I need a third surgery for clear margins. Good luck...you will be fine! X

  • Good luck with your further surgery!  X
