Diagnosis of stage 3c ovarian granulosa cell cancer but today, but don’t need chemotherapy.

All the literature states state 3 ovarian cancer requires chemotherapy but my oncologist states I don’t need it.
I’m confused.

  • Hi C-Louise and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry to learn about your cancer diagnosis. I can understand this is a very difficult time for you.

I'm afraid we cannot provide a medical opinion or treatment advice as we're not involved in your clinical care. Only a specialist can do this.  As we are not part of your team it is difficult for me to say why chemotherapy is not advised.  I wonder if you have a specialist nurse who you can talk to about your concerns or speak to your doctor.

Some people like to ask for a second opinion with another oncology ( cancer) team as they want to feel that they have left no stone unturned. If this is something that you would like to do, you could ask your GP or current specialist to refer you. We have some general information about getting a second opinion.

I'm sorry I could not be of more help.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Hi C-Louise

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I was diagnosed with granulosa cell cancer in December. I was stage 1C.

Obviously I'm not a medical expert, but from discussing with my team and also doing a fair bit of reading, chemotherapy is very rarely used for GCT because it is a relatively slow-growing cancer, so chemo is less effective (chemo targets fast growing cells).

I have read about both targeted radiotherapy and also hormonal therapy being used.

If you are interested, there is a fantastic group on Facebook called UK GCT Survivor Sisters which is a wealth of information and support.

If there's anything I can help with please reach out xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to comment and thank you for the advice.
I will look into that group as at the moment I’m a bit lost with it all.
I have arranged a follow up appointment with the oncologist as it was all a bit of a blur.
I am hoping I can ask more questions regarding this.
How have you managed following the diagnosis? It seems to be all I can think about at the moment.
    xx

  • That's good that you've got an appointment to discuss everything. I found taking notes helpful during appointments.

It's been a bit up and down but overall I've managed ok. I was diagnosed after having a large 'cyst' removed that turned out to be GCT. The hardest thing for me was then deciding my next move - either single ovary removal or full staging with total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophrectomy. I took a good few weeks to make a decision but once I had I felt a little better and kind of went into 'game mode' and just got on with things. (In the end I made the hard decision to have the hysterectomy)

It does still take up a lot of my thoughts, but as the weeks go past it is becoming less so, so hopefully that will be the same for you.

Do let us know how it goes with the oncologist x
