10 year after breast cancer

Hi in a few weeks it will be 10 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. I have been on anastrazole for 10 years but I recently came across a letter from consultant after my initial diagnosis etc and have read that I should have been on anastrazole for 5 years the. Tamoxifen for the last 5 years, however I have had no contact with the oncologist since I was put on the medication and don’t know if they should have been in touch with me. Obviously I would have followed this up had I known. Also can anyone tell Me what happens now, do I stop taking the medication, do I get an appointment to see a consultant to discuss my concerns? I feel a bit like I’ve been abandoned. Having said all that I am feeling very grateful that I have come this far.

  • Hello Maureen1950 and thank you for your post,

How long a person is on anastrozole depends on their situation and is individual. A person can stay on anastrozole for 10 years or it may be after 5 years they then may switch and have Tamoxifen for a further 5 years. Unfortunately, as a nurse not involved in your care, I cannot say why you were kept on the anastrozole

As it has been 10 years since you have been on hormone therapy, it is best to discuss this and your concerns with your GP. Usually after the first 5 years of diagnosis, you are discharged from the hospital and the GP takes over your care.

They may be able to explain why you were kept on anastrozole and what happens now you have been on it for 10 years. I imagine you will be advised to stop taking the anastrozole, however, your GP should clarify this for you.

I hope this helps a little. You can read about follow-up after breast cancer treatment on our website.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best
