Urgent referral post menopause

I have new onset vaginal bleeding and it has been 8 years since my last period. My Gp says that the urgent referral time isn't 2 weeks anymore and can be 4-6 weeks or longer. Is this normal?

  • Hello Ishy5 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the bleeding you are having and appreciate your concern.

The suspected cancer pathway has recently changed to now be called the 28 day pathway (faster diagnosis standard) this is supposed to work in a similar way to the 2 week pathway but unfortunately due to NHS pressures many people are needing to wait much longer to be seen.

We have information about waiting times on our webpages.

I really do understand how worrying and frustrating this is for people with symptoms but hopefully you will hear something from the hospital. Of course if in the meantime your symptoms worsten do let your GP know or contact NHS111 out of hours or in an emergency.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Naomi

  • This is the same for myself. I have been on HRT for a few years and have had unexplained bleeding a few times over the past couple of years but this time it seems different as it is accompanied by a fair bit of mucus which apparently could be another sign of womb cancer. My doctor referred me last week, but the NHS have rejected the referral saying that I need to be off the HRT for at least six weeks due to their change in guidelines. I cannot make up my mind whether I should pay to go private as this is really messing with my head or do I wait another five weeks to see if the bleeding stops as I am now if the oestrogen. I am due to go on holiday in three weeks and don’t want to risk being in any pain from the biopsy as I have read on other threads here. I am really unsure what to do.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are in this situation of being unsure of what to do next. Unfortunately, we cannot give a medical opinion of what you should do.

We have information on womb biopsies on our website in case helpful, and the EVE appeal offers support for anything to do with gynaecological cancers.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
