Length of safe Letrozole holiday owing to severe arthralgia with oestrogen positive breast cancer

Hi

I've been taking Letrozole for 2 1/4 years and now have severe and disabling arthralgias. I was advised that a break from a 5 year course for up to 12 weeks was safe, but on reading research this is contradicted.

I'm worried as I've had 4 week break up to today and have noticed some improvement from the symptoms. When is safe to recommence treatment?

Thank you

Marguerite

  • Hi Marguerite and thank you for your post,

I am afraid as nurses who are not involved in your care, we cannot give a medical opinion.

I was unsure what research you are referring to, but it would be worth discussing your concerns with your breast specialist/ breast nurse specialist (CNS) as they know your situation.

The doctors will always weigh whether possible side effects outweigh a treatment's benefits and will look at a person's quality of life. For some women, a break from their medication can help with side effects such as joint pain and things like changing the hormone therapy can sometimes help.

Breast cancer now has useful information about hormone therapy and joint pain.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful on this occasion but do have a chat with someone who is involved in your care.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Take care Marguerite, all the best
