I recently started taking a dose of specialist olive oil daily. Yesterday I was told I have bowel cancer. It's early days but I'd like advice on continuing the olive oil or not. Thanks

Hello Yclay and thanks for your post,
I am sure that taking a daily dose of olive oil would be fine with any treatment that you are offered but it is worth running it by your specialist or your bowel cancer nurse.
There is a lot of information about the benefits of a Mediterranean diet which of course includes olive oil but we would always advise anyone taking supplements to discuss this with their team.
I have come across an article about Olive oil effects on Colorectal cancer in a Pub med study but it does conclude that;
'Further clinical research is needed to clarify the beneficial effects of olive oil and its components. A better knowledge of the compounds found in olive oil could lead to the development of nutritional supplements or chemotherapeutic agents with a potential in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.'
We do have some information about diet during bowel cancer treatment which you may find helpful to look at
I hope this is helpful but if you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Best wishes,
Catherine
