Bleeding suddenly stopped, womb cancer stage 1

Hello, my mum is 79 and after 2 weeks of bleeding from her vagina she reported this to me, gp referral done, a and e visit complete, 2 consultants seen all within 3 weeks of first presenting with this issue, told it is a thickening of the lining of the womb and cancer stage 1, since then about 10 days later an MRI scan was done, then an MDT meeting, followed then by another 10 day wait only to be told a CT scan would now need to be done on other areas/organs.  So after an initial quick response by the NHS it now seems to be dragging on and I am worried my mum's cancer will develop into stage 2 or further, the strangest thing is when she was bleeding she didn't feel ill, however suddenly in the last day or so she has stopped bleeding altogether but now has abdominal pain and feels "strange".  What could be happening?  Any help appreciated or what you think the next steps will be as they said it will result in a hysterectomy which she has accepted but we just want this done now so she can rest easy and not have all this constant worry of the unknown, thank you.  A worried son.

  • Hello Dougie1989 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation and appreciate the worry this must be for both of you.

Unfortunately no one here can say why your mum may now be experiencing some new symptoms but if they continue or worsen she should let her doctor know.

Unfortunately it can take longer than hoped to get tests done and the results to come back and it seems for your mum the MDT wanted further information before planning the next steps. Sometimes further scans are needed to help plan and decide the best treatment for a patient and can also help to stage a cancer. (determine the size and extent of a cancer).

Sit tight for now if you can. The waiting and not knowing is unsettling so do keep yourselves busy and your mind on other things. I'm sure the hospital is trying to get things done as quickly as they can and hopefully your mum will hear something soon with a plan and date for treatment.

If your mum doesn't hear anything soon then she could call the consultants secretary through the main hospital switchboard to see if they can update her.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Wishing your mum all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
