Lymph node removal

Omg I have such awful pain in my back armpit and where I have had wider excision I am 15 days post op,painkillers are not doing any good, and my arm is numb too feel as if I have been kicked by a horse

  • Hello Karenmd and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the pain that you are experiencing.

If you have a specialist nurse I would get in touch with  them and let them know about the pain that you are experiencing. As we are not involved in your care and don't know what you are taking for the pain it is difficult to be able to advise you. Pain is unfortunately to be expected after a lymph node removal. The numbness in the arm is probably due to damage of the nerves around the area.

I was unsure what type of cancer you have. If you had a wide local excision to your breast and lymph node removal you may find it helpful to read the information on  pain after breast surgery

If you are unable to speak to your specialist nurse then do speak to your GP to ask if they can advise you about what pain medication you can take. Trying to adequately control the pain is important so you can start mobilising your arm with the arm exercises they have probably given you.

You can look at our pages on exercises and You Tube video on our website.

I hope that you manage to speak to some one soon.

You are of course welcome to speak to one of the nurses on the helpline The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Catherine

  • Thank you I had skin cancer that spread to my lymph nodes under my arm,I did have appointment today thank god in plastics out patients and I did get all the steri strips removed and did get to see a Dr.aswell because of the back pain I have hopefully the pain meds he has prescribed will do the trick, but I really didn't know what to do with myself thank you xx

  • A lymph node removal from your armpit can be a painful surgery as they damage the nerves to get to the nodes. It will also cause numbness for a long time - sometimes the feeling doesn't return 100%. I had nodes removed from my groin & pelvis & my inner thigh is still numb 15 years later.

It's good that you've seen your consultant & they are aware & treating you. Don't be afraid to contact them again if the pain worsens or the medication doesn't do the trick.
